Columbian Centinel is first published
March 24, 1784
[6/10/1790] Originally the Massachusetts Centinel and the Republican Journal, the semi-weekly newspaper is published by Benjamin Russell and William Warden from an office ear today’s 31 State Street. Upon Warden’s death in 1790, Russell becomes sole proprietor and editor and changes its name. The Federalist newspaper subsequently attains the highest circulation in Boston, and with the anti-Federalist Boston Chronicle, one of the two most influential papers in the town. It continues to publish until April 29, 1840.
